Nov.5th - 8th

Hi Gr.8's,

Well, this week is a short 4-day week due to the non-instructional day on Friday. Normally we'd be moving on to Tables in MS Word and doing a calendar assignment, but since this will be my last week of teaching you Info Tech 8, I want to start the Brochure assignment instead. I will teach you how to set up the brochure, create a realistic looking coupon, as well as insert a map. Once you are done that, then you can learn Tables and how to create a Calendar, before moving on to Power Point.

I've really enjoyed teaching you all this semester and know you'll be left in good hands when I leave. Sorry that that has to be so soon. I wish you all the very best of luck in the rest of this rotation, as well as in your next rotation, Drama, with Ms.Crosby.

Take care and enjoy the rest of your year at LA Matheson!

Oct.29th - Nov.2nd

Hi Gr.8's,

This week, in addition to keyboarding practice I will be starting to do technique checks daily. Ensure you remember to adhere to the checklist I went over with you in class (see the duotang pg.3) ;)

As for your Microsoft Word assignments, this week you will be doing the following:

  • Finish your Ad Poster
  • Create a Menu
  • Type a 'Cookie Recipe'
  • Format an Article

If time allows, you will then be learning how to create tables in Microsoft Word as well.

See you in class!

Oct.22nd - 26th

Welcome to Info Tech 8!
CSI stands for 'Creative Skills and Information Technology'. As you know, this is a rotational course that gives you a taste of 3 different subject areas: Art, Drama, and Info Tech! You have just finished Drama, the first rotation of this rotational course and are now beginning the second rotation- Info Tech with me! Each rotation is approximately 7 weeks in length and your mark at the end of the semester will be a combined mark for all 3 courses.

In Info Tech 8 my goal is to ensure every Grade 8 student leaves my class with the skills to create professional and creative assignments for school. We will be studying:
  • Keyboarding & Proper Technique (throughout the course)
  • Microsoft Word Processing
  • Microsoft Power Point Presentations
and if time allows, possibly...
  • Photoshop
  • Excel Spreadsheets
This course will help you in your other subject areas when it comes to doing assignments and projects such as essays, reports, newspapers, brochures, and presentations on the computer.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your success in this course is highly dependent on your being in class each day and USING YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY! I give plenty of class time for you to work on the computer to complete your assignments. However, if you don't finish your work in time before we move on to the next assignment, it is your responsibility to work outside of class to get it finished. You may ask to stay after school in my computer lab (just please ask ahead of time), you may work on the library computers at lunch time, &/or you may work at home on your own computer. That being said however, you need to have the same software programs we are using as well as a way to get your work from home to school. It is therefore STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to get a USB Memory Stick (see picture below) for this class. I am not forcing anyone to get one, but it is a very good idea and would be useful in all of your courses throughout high school and beyond! (I wear mine around my neck and use it everyday!) It will make your life much easier to have a way to back up your work and transfer it from computer to computer, especially in the face of computer crashes and network failures on the school's server. For purposes of school, I would suggest you get a 4GB USB at most. You don't need anything bigger than that. Even a 2GB USB would be fine. You can buy them virtually anywhere, such as Walmart, Zellers, London Drugs, Staples, etc. They can range anywhere from $5-$20. Don't pay more than that and watch for sales!

USB Memory Device

Anyway, check back to this site regularly for updates on what we are doing in class and what assignments should be handed in and by when. I'll do my best to update this site weekly. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me at the email posted on this page under "About Me"

I look forward to teaching you all this semester!

Oct.15 - 19th

Hi Gr.8's,

This is our last week together. It's hard to believe! As they say, 'Time flies when you're having fun!' Anyway, since it is our last week, it means you absolutely must get your Power Point projects done and handed in to me electronically ASAP! I have to have marks for this report card done by this Wednesday, so you need to get your projects in by Tuesday at the latest! That way I can hopefully get them all marked and your final grades posted by Thursday (also your last day of class since Friday is a non-instructional day)!

If I cannot get the marks posted to you by Thursday, I will put them up in my room for one week, so you can always stop by and have a look. Otherwise, you can wait for your report card I guess! :)

It has been a pleasure teaching you and I wish you all the best of luck with the rest of your CSI 8 course and the rest of the school year. As of next Monday October 22nd you will go directly to your new class and teacher:

Drama 8
Rm A118 (Drama Theatre across from Office)
Ms.Crosby

Good bye and good luck!!!

Oct.9 - 12th

Hi Class,

Since both this and last Friday's class were interrupted due to the assemblies we had and we have missed our double-block class on Monday, we are a bit behind! This means we really need to work hard on Tuesday and make up for lost time!!  I will go over the final skills you will need for your upcoming Power Point project, which includes something really cool called Path Animation! I can't wait to show you this, as it is super fun and really adds a creative flare to your presentation. This will take most of class on Tuesday so you can expect that on Wednesday I will assign you your final Power Point project. More on this in class....

Also, we are just about done the typing tests so aim to finish those this week so I can get the final marks marked and added to your in-class mark!

I look forward to seeing you in class! :)

Sunday, 30 September 2012

Oct.1st - 5th

Hi Gr.8's,

Since Friday's class was taken up for the Gr.8 Indoor Track Meet you will have Monday's double-block to finish your brochure. You are expected to have your brochure printed and handed in. If you are not finished in the classtime provided (you've had a solid week already), then you will have to work on your brochure outside of class time. I suggest using the library computers at lunch to get it done, or take it home on a USB drive and finish for homework. Please note: You MUST have Microsoft Word at home to do this. You cannot use Microsoft Works or Notepad. These programs are not compatible with the school software and so will note open.

This week we will continue our typing tests and technique checks. We will also move on to Excel Spreadsheets and then onto Power Point!

I look forward to seeing you in class!

-Ms.Sundin

Sept.25-28th

Hi Gr.8's,

This week we will of course be keyboarding for the first 10-15 minutes of class. However, this week we will also be starting our Typing tests in addition to our daily technique checks! Be sure to use proper technique and focus on accuracy. Remember- you are NOT being marked on speed!

This week you will continue working on your Brochures for your own store! On Friday I taught you how to make a realistic coupon. On Tuesday I will teach you how to insert a map to make your faux brochure look real!! This is my favorite assignment to teach and also to mark, because I am always impressed by the creativity of my students! :)

As a guideline, you should finish the first page (outside) of your brochure by the end of class on Tuesday and you should be able to finish pg.2 (inside) by Friday. That way you can hand your brochure in to me to be marked by Monday at the latest.

See you in class!

Sunday, 16 September 2012

Sept.17-21

Hi Gr.8's,

This week we will continue with keyboarding practice, only this week I'll be starting TECHNIQUE CHECKS! That's right, now I'll be checking your posture, foot placement, finger placement, etc. so be warned! :P

Last Friday you learned about tables, and as mentioned, you will be creating a Calendar, which is both a fun and practical use of tables. Your calendar should look something like this:

Once you've finished your calendars you can finish working on the mazes you started last week. They will count as an 'in-class activity'.

Have a good week and see you in class!
-Ms.Sundin

Week of Sept.10-14

Hey Everyone!

Hi Class,

This week we we will begin with our regular keyboarding warm up. I'd like you to really focus on using proper technique, because I'll  start marking you very soon! Following that you'll have class time to work on a Poster similar to the one you started on Friday. You should be able to finish it by the end of class. I'll be reviewing some formatting techniques, as well as showing you some more cool special effects you might want to try, like adding borders, reflections and dimension to your pictures!

Once you've finished your posters you'll learn how to add bullets, change the line spacing, change the margins, insert page numbers, and more, as you do a recipe assignment and a format an article.

See you in class!

Sunday, 22 January 2012

Week of Jan. 23-27th

Hi Gr.8's!

Well it is your last week (well actually 3 days) of the semester! If you haven't done so already, you need to finish your Power Point "All About Me" and get it handed in by the end of class on Monday. I need to have time to mark them so that I can get your final marks to you by Wednesday. I"ll also calculate and post your final marks for the entire CSI 8 course by Wednesday as well!

On Monday or Tuesday I will give you time to share your projects with eachother in class and can show you how to make the Power Point games if you like. I can also teach you a little bit of Photoshop as well. OR....we can watch a move on the last day of class. We'll see how we progress and can take a vote!

It has been a great rotation with you and I have enjoyed teaching you. I hope I'll get the chance to teach some or all of you again next year, possibly in Business Ed 10??!! (It is open to Gr.9's in case you're interested! ;) )

Take care,
-Ms.Sundin

Week of Jan.16-20th

Hi My Lovely Gr.8's :)

This week we will practice keyboarding using ATRT, games, and keyboarding challenges to spice things up. On Monday in class I'll give you some time to collect pictures for your Power Point projects and then the rest of the week will be allotted to getting your projects done. The sooner the better, because in any remaining class time I can teach you a little bit about Excel and Photoshop :)

If you have any missing assignments or typing tests to get caught up on, this is the week to do it! So work hard and have fun this week.

See you in class!

Have a great week and see you in class!

Week of Jan.3 -6

Hi Everyone &Welcome Back!

Each day this week we will of course begin with keyboarding practice and technique checks. This week we will also start Typing Tests, which remember, focus on accuracy and NOT speed. We will also begin the final project of our unit on Microsoft Word- Brochures. You will learn to make your very own two-sided, three paneled business brochure. This is always one of my favorite assignments to do in-class, as they are always so creative and professional-looking! Stay tuned for details in class!
